A food bank or foodbank is a non-profit, charitable organisation that gives out food (that has been donated to the charity) to people who don't have enough food or money to buy some.
.
Food poverty is hurting children and families.
You can read the poem below if you prefer.
FOOD POVERTY UK
Gnawing, clawing angry stomachs
neighbours cooking smells inviting
But there’s no invitation to be had
Salivating,
Drooling,
Then the tears they come
She no longer says it will be OK tomorrow
All that’s left are sighs and sorrow
She is sad
He is mad
Working 6 days a week
Mrs May please turn on your ears,
people don’t need platitudes or attitudes,
We need action today!
Do you hear me Mrs Theresa May?
Or do my pleas
like those of thousands
Fall on hardened ears?
Branded as Feckless & Reckless
What about the working poor?
They would prefer not to have handouts
Shame hits as they walk through the food bank door
Hope and nourishment in a 3-day box
& warmth & kindness for free
But shame and fear and helplessness
They do not disappear
The Food Bank is a lifeline
To families far and near
But shame on you our government
For making children weep
Hungry bellies
Empty minds
They can barely concentrate
Your policies – Mrs May, they border on real hate!
Another child
Another parent
Another empty fridge
Another step
Another door
Another withdrawal
from the Food Bank
Mrs May where are your listening ears?
Have you stored them away
In a drawer so full?
Children go hungry every day
Their drawers & cupboards bare
Mrs May is your heart so hard
That you choose to give no consideration
To the angry stomachs
And empty fridges
And children who can barely function
Those who run the food banks
The donators & volunteers
We give our sincerest thanks
For filling empty bellies
& drying children’s tears
Theresa you have washed your hands
But this is your responsibility!
So, as I speak these words
I sincerely take this stand
Why you ask?
Upon what right?
It’s the rights of humanity!
There are over 400 Food Banks throughout the UK.
Hunger is a hidden crisis in the UK, with over 1.3 million emergency boxes (3 day food supplies) distributed in 12 months.
The number of children needing food supplies was over 200,000 in a 6-month period and the number is rising. In 5 years the numbers of food supplies has increased 500%
Many of us think that only homeless people go hungry in the UK but this is not so. Many who visit food banks are individuals and families who are working on low incomes or are unemployed. A new benefit introduced by the Conservative government called "Universal Credit", is causing a lot of hardship for families!
You can help by donating food and/or becoming a volunteer.
The Trussell Trust is working to "stop hunger" and run the network of food banks.
